Kandy is the hill capital of Sri Lanka with a great historical and religious background. It is a city of kings where the last of all was King Sri Vikrama Rajasingha and it was the last kingdom of the country prior to gaining independence from the British in 1948. The city holds one of the most important Buddhist pilgrim sites in Sri Lanka and the world, The Temple of the Tooth Relic. The tooth relic of Lord Buddha is kept in a shrine in this temple.
The main chamber enshrines the sacred Tooth Relic which is kept encased in seven gemstone-studded golden caskets in the shape of stupas.
The gardens display over 4 000 different species of plants, regarded amongst the most superior in Asia. The highlight is the spectacular Orchid collection and a mighty avenue of palm trees.
It was built in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe and is located next to the Temple of the Tooth. It has a nice island in the middle that has a garden on it.
The Kandyan cultural show is an electrifying live cultural show that showcases traditional dance and musical performances, the show takes place every evening in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka.
